Hi, I'm Karine
I'm a meditation and certified mindfulness teacher, a dedicated life-long student of what this being human is all about, and a proud mother to two wonderful little humans. In fact, their presence in my life brought with it a sense of urgency to find an internal compass, sense of groundedness and peace, and they've been two of my greatest teachers along this path.
I was first introduced to meditation and mindfulness at a 10-day silent retreat in 1995 in the foothills of the Himalayas in India. It was a jump-in-at-the-deep-end kind of introduction, but it sent my down a path that changed the course of my life. I've been devoted to the idea that an exploration of our own humanity through these practices can be the greatest adventure a person will ever experience in their lives. I know, because I'm on it. I hope to help facilitate this perspective for others and inject some fun into the whole project!
Meditation and mindfulness practices are what enabled me to not just read and be, momentarily, inspired by books I'd read, but was key in making that wisdom an integral part of my lived, everyday experience. Before that I knew intellectually what needed to be changed, and what I should do differently, but struggled to make it happen.
It would be many years of practice before I learned the science behind how mindfulness changes the shape and structure of our brains, and our experiences. I learned this first through my own experience, as its gradual influence colored every area of my life, and caused widespread change throughout.
I believe we all have the capacity to live a life unburdened by excessive fear and worry and stress. And to experience our lives as deeply precious and meaningful. This goes beyond finding greater balance, and cultivating healthier mental and emotional habits, and connects us to our shared humanity.
I found my first taste of freedom through practices (like those I teach here) that empowered me to make of myself a place of refuge.
What does that mean? It means that I can now tap into a well of resources to find balance and freedom, independent of the ever changing circumstances around me. And I want to help you do the same.
The sense of freedom and security (in life in general) opens me up to deeply connecting with and enjoying the people and things I love most - my family, friends, the study of our biological and social human lives, contemplative and wisdom traditions, astronomy, travel, music, dance, song and more!
